TEMPE, Ariz.—Arizona State University’s football team, under the direction of first-year Head Coach Todd Graham, will return to its fabled preseason paradise, Camp Tontozona, August 14-18.
The complete practice schedule for the 2012 version of Camp Tontozona is listed below.
Fans who wish to attend this year’s practices at Camp Tontozona should be aware of a few travel, traffic and parking issues for 2012.
Portions of State Road 260 (SR260) are under construction. The section of SR260 between Kohl’s Ranch and the Camp Tontozona turnoff is under construction. Please take this into consideration and allow for extra driving time.
The annual Payson Pro-Rodeo is being held in Payson, August 16 through 19. The Pro-Rodeo Parade will begin in the city of Payson at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 18. Due to these events we encourage fans to allow extra driving time when traveling to Camp Tontozona.
The Camp Tontozona scrimmage will be held on Saturday, August 18 at 10 a.m. The Sun Devil football team will take the field around 9:30 a.m. andwill begin scrimmaging at 10 a.m. ASU is expecting very large crowds for all practices and the scrimmage this year. Fans are encouraged to allow for extra travel and parking time due to the large crowds that are expected.
Parking for the general public and the Saturday, August 18 scrimmage will be along one side of the Camp Tontozona road that leads to the field. Parking attendants will direct guests to the correct side. Once that road is full fans will be directed to overflow parking inside the construction zone on SR260. Please follow signs on SR260 to the parking areas. Once drivers pass Kohl’s Ranch they should stay to the right and proceed through the traffic restrictions to the parking areas on the right. Shuttle vans will be provided for elderly and disabled guests or other patrons who may need assistance. Due to the expected large crowd and the high volume of traffic the shuttle service potentially will have a long wait. Fans are encouraged to walk into Camp Tontozona from the parking areas.
ASU encourages fans to car pool and share rides to Camp Tontozona practices and the scrimmage.
Camp Tontozona provides the Sun Devils with a unique setting for concentration and preparation for the new season ahead. The camp began hosting Arizona State football’s preseason practice in 1960 under the direction of head coach Frank Kush and continued through 2007. Set within the cool mountain country of Payson, Ariz., the camp borders the Tonto National Forest, which provides the first two syllables of Tontozona. The state of Arizona offers the last pair.
